There is an age old argument on the benefits, (or lack therof) of rinsing your rice prior to cooking. While many Asian cultures almost always rinse their rice, others don't find it as important. Rinsing rice was orginally done to remove the twigs and dirt, but is now suggested to remove starch and to make the rice less sticky.
